This printed roll of Company C, 4th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, survives because of a pension fight. Lieutenant Polk Montgomery, once the company’s orderly sergeant, mailed the folder to T. L. Taylor about 1911. Taylor corrected it in pencil “from roll that I have,” the roll he had kept since the consolidation of 1864, and in August 1912 he sent it to the Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners to support the application of his comrade J. W. Halley. When Halley asked for his papers back in 1916, the Board refused, and the roll stayed in his file. It lists 110 men. Taylor’s X marks the five “present at surrender.” Merritt R. Brown appears as “M. R. Brown” among the privates, with no remark and no mark beside his name.
Names and remarks as printed, misspellings included. The third column gives T. L. Taylor’s pencil additions. X = “present at surrender.” [Brackets] mark editorial notes.
